It was a hit at the box office.The film recorded as 'Hit' at the box office.a remake on a telugu movie named "thuluvithunu" released in 1989 with venkatesh and vijayashanti in the lead roles.The film was earlier scheduled for release in 1987, but was shelved after Sanjeev Kumar died, and released four years later, post production works were completed under his son Ajay Kumar's direction.[2] The film is dedicated to him. The film was also dedicated to Yash Chopra's friend Raj Kapoor on whose insistence the novel was adapted into a film. The film was a musical production with a song composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi, while the background score is by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, using the sitar.The film was one of the biggest hits of 1988. The film was inspired from a short story of Pakistani writer Ahmad Nadeem Qasimi. It is about the last hours of Zulifkar Ali Bhutto, who was hanged by the regime of General Zia-ul-Haq.
